I love working with a medium pencil on a rough surface. The boy and his friend were drawn on a gessoed plywood board. Textures speak, and any medium chosen has its own voice.
Growing up in a busy, noisy household, I learned early on to prize the mental space created by an open book.
When working with text, there is something powerful about finding ways to bring a viewer in to the sense of the moment, not just the facts of what is happening, but all the currents underneath the surface.
